- So last update was a vague allusion (or illusion? was it a trick?) to a
supershow in September. Well, now that supershow has happened, been split into 6
episodes, as per HBO's request (oh yeah, we got picked up by HBO), and the first
3 episodes are up right here. The next 3
will be up each Monday for the next 3 weeks, and then our short pay-cable season
is over and we go back to the think tank for an indeterminate amount of time and
figure out how to wow you with Season 3.
- We considered running down the results of the show, but you'll probably get a
pretty good idea of that by watching the episodes and/or reading the results, if
you so desire, so no need to be redundant. So let's talk ABOUT the show. It was
amazing. Now, rarely if ever have we run (or even attended) a BAD show, but this
one was right up among the best, if not THE best, that any of us have ever been
involved in. In 17 matches over 2 days, none were bad. In fact, let's go
positive and not negative: they were ALL good. Every single one. Every single
wrestler, in 2, sometimes 3, matches over that weekend, didn't THINK about
putting on a bad performance. Everyone brought their A-game. Everyone delivered,
and in fact OVER-delivered in many cases. This is taken from my (oop, we're in
the first person, I guess we'll stick with it) post on the GBYWN the day before
the Brits left Vancouver, the final people to leave: "Gonna
be a depressing weekend once we leave the airport tomorrow. And the reason it's
going to be depressing is because it was such a goddamn awesome time when
everyone was here. Hangouts aside, which consisted of 9 days themselves, just
looking at the 2-day show, it was amazing. 100% good matches, top to bottom.
That doesn't happen a lot, or, like, ever. We're debating whether or not this
show was better than VCW vs. The World 4. Those who were at THAT show know what
high praise that means for THIS show. Those who weren't, here's all you need to
know: at the BYWL Awards, VVTW4 won best supershow of ALL TIME. And this might
have been better. I can't applaud everyone enough for their performances on the
show. Every single person without exception met, and in most cases exceeded, the
already very high expectations of everyone. And match quality aside, I think
everyone had FUN, and isn't that the point? I never looked around and saw
someone who wasn't having a good time. Really, isn't that all you can ask for?
You put down your money for a plane ticket or gas money in the case of people
coming in, or you put down your money for the venue and ring rental and all the
other costs in the case of people here, and why do you do it? In the hopes that
you'll have a good time with friends that you haven't seen in a while. And the
money was worth it ten times over. Twenty. Anything. I don't think you quite
know how happy it makes me feel when I hear someone say that this was the best
weekend of their life. This show and everything around it was an embarrassment
of riches to me. Aaaand I choked up writing that last sentence, so that's my cue
to leave. Thank you." The whole thread is worth reading
here; I've never seen nicer things said after a supershow. Speaking
personally, this show was a HUGE hassle in the days and weeks leading up to it.
We knew we had to give people lots of advance notice, so we announced the show
about 4 months in advance with no building. After a lot of fruitless searching,
I tracked down the landlord of our original Wrestleplex from 2002-2006 (and
VVTW4 in 2007). The original unit wasn't vacant, but one three units over was.
They couldn't rent it to us for the weekend right away because they couldn't
risk NOT renting it to someone for the full month. So we couldn't even know if
we could have the place unit two weeks out from the show. Pretty tight. Luckily
the unit remained vacant (because they were asking an exorbitant monthly rate
for it, so about 10 days before the show, we were told we could have it. The
whole procedure paralleled VVTW4 in many ways (no venue until the last minute,
quite costly, etc.). But then there was the issue of insurance (which DIDN'T
come up at VVTW4). The landlord didn't want any liability. I said I would sign
any document they gave me that waived them of any legal responsibility, but
apparently that wasn't good enough. So after a $2000 damage deposit and putting
my just-paid-off car up as collateral, as well as the actual $600 rental for the
building and $450 ring rental, we actually had things set, with the insurance
papers being signed 24 HOURS before the show started. Not good for my blood
pressure. Bottom line: WOULD I GO THROUGH ALL THIS SHIT AGAIN TO PUT ON A SHOW
LIKE THIS? YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I WOULD. I'd walk through Hell to do this again.
Fuck a bit of money and some stress. This made my 2012, and if not much happened
in 2011 or will happen in 2013 (though I bet something will...), this would
still make up for it.
- We really have to thank every single person who travelled in. When you decide
to come to a show like this, it's a time and money commitment, and the only
thing you get back from it is the enjoyment you had and the memories you take
away from it. These people thought that commitment was worth it: B-Cubed and
Chris Dupree from Philadelphia, Phoenix from Pittsburgh, Jonathan Hitler from
Ontario, Rigor Mortis from Tennessee, Dangerous Dave Devereaux from Missouri,
Domi and Alex Ohlson from Illinois, Draven Lawless and Cole Crazy from
Washington, and Alex McConnell, Chris Goodwin, Dan Van Virtigo, and Jesus Jr.
from England. All these guys flew or drove several hours to come here, spent the
money, and helped make the show what it was. And you know who else we have to
thank? All the ISUXDIX guys for coming together to put on a simply goddamn
incredible show: Scott Henson, Daniel Makabe, Yakuza J, Drew Sarian, Kaden
Talbain, PSYCH, Chris Mason, Mercury, Zeus McFly, Nick Price, and Allan Creasy.
If I wasn't such a lazy prick, I'd write each of you (local and out of town) a
note saying what a great time I had with you, how well you did on the show, and
how much it means to me that you were there. But I hope you already know.
- Oh, and if you haven't watched our "Call Me Maybe" (anti-)hype video for the
show ("Anti-Hype #7: The Music"), stop fucking around and do it right now. It's
the best promo we've ever done. It's in the
Supershow Promos section of the Media page.
