- The major news to report since last time is Best of the Rest VIII. Several
upsets in the first round saw Mitch Deppen, Zeus McFly, Daniel Makabe, and
Yakuza J advance. In the semis, Daniel Makabe was unable to cheat his way to
victory like he did against Drew Sarian and fell to a Zeus McFly Powerbomb.
Yakuza J wrestled a total of less than 60 seconds combined in the first two
rounds, pinning Senor Cerveza and Mitch Deppen (who got a big win over Scott
Henson in the first round) with the first move he did. As always, the new
wrinkle in BOTR this year was that the two finalists play a game of Black Jack,
with the winner choosing the stipulation for the finals. Yakuza went first and
got a 20, thinking he was sitting pretty. Zeus McFly got a 19, and with nothing
to lose, he decided to hit. An ace came up, giving him 20. He immediately hit
again, miraculously got a second ace, giving him 21 and the win. Perhaps not
fully understanding the rules of Black Jack, he hit again. His retarded gamble
somehow paid off, as instead of a standard playing card, his hit yielded the
Barbed Wire Card (which I believe you're supposed to take out of the deck before
you deal). This of course enraged Yakuza, as he was not prepared for a match of
this magnitude. The one non-tournament match on Day 1 was a big one, as Senor
Cerveza came out, wanting to prove himself after losing quickly in BOTR. His
open challenge brought out Drew Sarian, who unfairly lost to Red Money in his
last Canadian Title challenge, and never received a rematch. Cerveza agreed to
the match, and it was on for the VCW Canadian Title. Mere minutes later, Sarian
was able to hit Cerveza's own Bottle Cap on him, and we had our second new
Canadian Champion in the month of November. Day 2 saw both champions lose in
non-title matches. Daniel Makabe beat Drew Sarian for the second straight day
with his feet on the ropes, and then demanded a title shot. Sarian agreed, but
only on the condition that it be in a match where Makabe can't cheat: a Ladder
Match. This will take place this coming week, and will be the first Ladder Match
in VCW in over 3 years. Also, Scott Henson beat Triple Crown Champion Special K
cleanly with the CRITICAL! Championship Edition, saying if he hits it one more
time, it is, in fact, going to win him the championship. Then the main event:
the BOTR finals and the first No Ropes Barbed Wire match in VCW since Daniel
Makabe vs. Zeus McFly in March 2005. After avoiding the barbed wire early on,
both Yakuza J and Zeus McFly ended up bleeding EVERYWHERE after getting cut up,
especially Yakuza, who was covered in his own blood for the bulk of the match. A
German Suplex through a FUCK door (see also: FUCK oar, August 2007) couldn't get
the job done. Zeus almost had it won with a big Powerbomb on his 280+ pound
opponent, but Yakuza kicked out, sending McFly back into the barbed wire. When
Zeus stumbled back, he was met with a Steiner Screwdriver, giving Yakuza the big
win and his first Best of the Rest title. As a result, Yakuza will receive a
future Canadian Title shot (most likely against the winner of the Makabe/Sarian
ladder match).
