- Happy belated Groundhog Day. Let's catch up, shall we? On January 17 & 18, we tried the concept of running one show over two days, with the opener and second match being on Saturday, and the semi-main and main being on Sunday. This is known in some circles as doing TWO SMALL SHOWS, but let's not get caught up in semantics. It was one show over two days. We didn't do Survival of the Illest as planned, but hopefully it will happen soon. Chris Mason beat Scott Henson with a flash huracanrana pin out of nowhere in a tag match featuring Mason tagging with Zeus McFly again the Van-city Saints (Henson & Yakuza J). Mason figured that since Henson was in line for a Triple Crown shot, he should get one too by virtue of beating him. He would receive it the very next day, as he took on Special K in a match that was actually a long time coming. The two were booked against each other on a show that got cancelled in May 2008 before Special K won the Triple Crown, and never got to make up the match until now. Despite Chris Mason being in VCW the entire 3.5 year span that Special K has been a VCW member, they have never faced each other in the ring (though they tagged once in 2008 as "Kevin Kelly"). The match was excellent, and if you ask anyone there, they'll tell you the match went at least 15 minutes. Actual match time: 6:53. How they managed to pack that much action into that short a time, we'll never know. At any rate, after a Blockbuster that dumped Mason on top of his head, Special K hit a very fancy double-wristclutch powerbomb into a Bearhug Brainbuster for the win. The next week, Chris Mason came to Scott Henson saying he needed a opponent he could "come back" against. After losing the Triple Crown shot, he wanted to get back on the right track with someone he could have a good match with, but also someone he could beat. After explaining that he is in fact not the VCW booker and only works there, Henson said he would make an exception and use his vast network of shady connections to find a suitable opponent for Chris Mason. This opponent turned out to be none other than Kristian Drake, making a surprise return after the longest absence of any wrestler in VCW history (his last being July 4th 2004 against, funnily enough, Chris Mason). Mason didn't know what to do with this, but nevertheless DID have a good match with Drake (Part 1 of his goal); however, he did NOT win the match against Drake (Part 2 of his goal). Drake was able to put Mason away with a Sprial Bomb, harkening back to Drake's salad days of 2002 (damn, that's a long time ago). Mason attacked Drake after the match, frustrated with everything, also voicing his dissatisfaction with Scott Henson for putting this together. Also that week BXCW invaded, making it the first BXCW/VCW joint show held on VCW turf. Daniel Makabe may have finally found someone who can out-submission him in "The Assassin" Marcio de la Riva, who dazzled him with an array of holds from various positions. When it looked like Assassin had it won with a Triangle Choke, Makabe rolled over him with a Jacknife Hold for the three count. Despite getting the win, Makabe was basically unconscious from the choke after the pinfall, with Assassin claiming he beat Makabe just as much as Makabe beat him. Hopefully a rematch can be set up in the near future. Also, the undefeated Richmond Horticultural Society kept their streak alive taking on the Darth Duo of I Gore & Jazon Steal, with Mitch Deppen getting the win on Steal with his Footstomp Surf. In the main event, Special K defended the BXCW Quadruple Crown (which, since he has won it, has been defending in conjuction with the VCW Triple Crown) in a 5 Way Elimination against Scott Henson, Yakuza J, Cole Crazy, and Taco Supreme. It came down to Henson, K, and Cole. As Henson was getting Cole up for a Screwdriver Frosion, Special K came in and pushed Cole's feet down into a Small Package, much as Henson did to K in a 3 Way in December. That brought it down to K and Crazy, and after a lot of back and forth, Cole Crazy hit a never before seen move (at least by VCW) which was essentially a Double-Knee Go 2 Sleep, and it was enough to bring the BXCW Quadruple Crown back to American soil. We understand the Quadruple Crown will now be used as a "King of the Ring"-type annual trophy, as they are having a tournament for their new World Title. That all brings us to January 31, which ended up being a (very) early contender for Show of the Year. Chris Mason continued his streak of excellent, short matches, although he probably wishes he could actually WIN some of them, after losing this particular match to Mitch Deppen via the Deep End. Drew Sarian, after a few weeks' absence, returned to defend the Canadian Title against Zeus McFly, which he did successfully with his Roll-over Crucifix Hold after both men were blinded by eye pokes. Daniel Makabe took on Yakuza J in their first big-time singles match since 2007, where the finish came when Yakuza J cut back on an Old Timey Backdrop attempt by Makabe, but then Makabe cut back on Yakuza's pin attempt for the win. The main event was Special K defending the VCW Triple Crown against Scott Henson who earned the shot by way of pinning K cleanly at Best of the Rest. Since then, they have each cost each other a match in multi-mans. They ran into each other before the show, where Henson said he didn't have a problem with Special K, in fact they were planning to team last year, but if that's not happening and someone has to be on top of VCW, it's going to be Henson. He also pointed out that he has never lost a Triple Crown shot as the challenger (which, according to our research team, is true), and that K better bring everything he has. Well, he certainly did, bringing Darkness Busters, the Octaclutch 5000 which earned him a huge win over Daniel Makabe in 2007, all kinds of pins, and maybe most importantly, kickouts. He kicked out of the CRITICAL! Championship Edition which beat him in their previous singles encounter, and added himself to a VERY short list of people who have kicked out of You Sunk My Battleship. With Henson exasperated and not knowing what more to do, Special K saw an opportunity, busting out a move he has talked about before but has never attempted to do: the Top Turnbuckle Darkness Buster (think El Generico). This completely destroyed Henson, and three seconds later, Special K had his fifth successful defense of the Triple Crown, which he has now held for over 7 months. The following week, Special K was in another title match, but this time in the challenger role as he took on Drew Sarian for the Canadian Title. K played the dominant role in the match, but after pushing off a Stunner only to get immediately hit with it, Drew Sarian was able to keep him down for the three in what could only be considered an upset despite the fact that the champion retained. Post-match, Sarian said he was kind enough to put up his title (and retain), so it would only be fair of Special K to put up his the next week in a rematch, to which K agreed. Also on the show, Daniel Makabe took on Zeus McFly and after countering the end of McFly's Kenka Combo into a Heel Hook, seemed to have the match won. However, McFly got to the ropes for a rope break, and for whatever reason, Makabe refused to break the hold, deciding the better thing to break would be McFly's leg. Makabe was DQ'ed and forcibly removed from McFly. And you are up to date!
- VCW vs. The World 6: VCW vs. The World 7 is coming WAY too quick. Only two more shows then the weekend is upon us. 24 fly-ins thus far. COMPLETELY STUPID. We have no way to house these people, to feed them, or to put that many people on one card. It's going to be a disaster.
